The Bison Skewer: Solving the Problem of Food Spinning

Round skewers are round. That’s the entire problem. When food is threaded onto a round skewer, there’s nothing preventing it from rotating — the circular cross-section offers no grip, and anything with density or irregular shape will spin freely during cooking. The result is an uneven cook, food that falls off, and ingredients that have moved from exactly where you placed them to wherever the grate rotation took them.

The Bison Skewer solves this with a flat blade.

Why a Flat Blade Works

A flat blade pushes against the interior of whatever is threaded onto it. The blade edge contacts the flesh and locks rotation — not through friction alone, but through geometry. The flat face prevents the food from turning past the blade edge. You thread the food once. It stays where you put it through the entire cook.

The practical difference in a cook is significant. Kebab mixes stay orientated correctly so the outside cooks evenly. Vegetables don’t migrate away from each other. Fish holds its shape and position. Every piece cooks where it was placed, for as long as it needs to cook there.

The Material and Specification

The Bison Skewer blade is 420 stainless — consistent with the rest of the Bison Hill tool range. Wide enough to grip, thin enough to be removed cleanly from cooked food without tearing. Reusable and dishwasher safe.

That last point matters more than it sounds. Wooden skewers absorb water during soaking and can spit steam during cooking. They can only be used once, which means buying repeatedly and producing waste. A 420 stainless flat-blade skewer that lasts indefinitely and cleans in a dishwasher is buy-once kit. The Bison Hill approach applied to a skewer.

Tested With

We tested the Bison Skewer with kebab mixes, whole vegetables, cubed meat, and fish. Food stayed exactly where threaded in every test. The spinning problem, specifically, does not occur with a flat blade. That was the brief. That’s what it does.
